Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative
The Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative was established to ensure the youth perspective and voice was included in the discussions and work taking place in Manitoba to provide suicide prevention and intervention. The initial intent was to ensure youth representation on committees and working groups focused on a collaborative approach to suicide prevention. The AMC Secretariat was directed by the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) to provide capacity building for First Nation youth to understand and identify ways for youth to deal with suicide in the community. The AMC Secretariat was trained as Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Facilitators and enhanced the ASIST curriculum to suit the needs of the communities. The AMC Secretariat, since 2002, has trained several hundred First Nation youth and community resource people in ASIST. In addition, the Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative ensures that there is youth involvement in the planning, development, and delivery of suicide prevention resources and initiatives specific to First Nations across Manitoba.

WHAT IS ASIST ?
(Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
ASIST is a 2-day workshop designed to teach the skills to competently and confidently intervene with a youth at risk of suicide. Developed by LivingWorks Education, Inc., the workshop prepares Youth Gatekeepers to integrate principles of intervention into everyday practice.
The curriculum is divided into four learning modules: attitudes, knowledge, intervention & resources. Skills and principles are illustrated with case studies presented in videos and live dramatizations, role-play simulations, discussions and in the Suicide Intervention Handbook.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be better able to:
· Reduce attitudinal barriers which hinder the ability to be direct and comfortable with suicidal situations
· Dispel myths about youth suicide
· Identify the indicators and assess suicidal risk
· Intervene with a youth at risk of suicide
· Engage in efforts to build collaborative resource networks for suicidal youth.
